The microbiome if a hot area of interest for not only researchers, but also the general public and citizen scientist. In this blog post, I am going to myth bust a few commonly held beliefs and advise you of the main do's and don'ts for microbiome wellness.
Interesting microbiome facts:
The microbiome is now being thought of as another organ in our body and weighs around 2.5 kgs. There are 200 times more genes in our microbiome than in our body! It has many functions which are essential to human health. The microbiome houses around 70% of our immune system, it may play a role in weight management, it produces either pro or anti-inflammatory substances, it makes certain vitamins and aids in the digestion of our food and even the metabolism of certain herbal medicines and drugs.
Microbiome health or lack thereof has been linked to various disease states including gut disorders, alzheimers, parkinsons, multiple sclerosis and many more. Having a healthy microbiome can protect yo...
Many of my little patients can be resistant to trying new foods, particularly the green ones! Know that fussiness in children can be quite normal, and sometimes it can take up to 20 times of seeing a new food for a child to try it, and then even longer before their taste buds can appreciate, or even tolerate it.
Sometimes fussy eating is caused by nutritional deficiencies such as zinc, which is involved in many stages of the digestive process, including the ability to taste food normally, and iron deficiency, which will usually be accompanied by unusual cravings such as wanting to eat ice or sand, or loving the smell of nail polish or petrol. In these cases, obviously a multivitamin is warranted, and can make the world of difference if you persist with supplementation for at least a few months. Another great tip for reversing iron deficiency, is purchasing an iron fish from www.ironfish.com and cooking meals with it. See their website for more details.
Some clients ask me why I recommend testing as part of their treatment plan. Without testing, you are making an educated guess, which can sometimes be wrong, waste your time and your money. Testing is so important as it gives you information which gives clear direction regarding your treatment. It helps me recognise key drivers and therefore treat the underlying cause of your health condition.
Some of the more common tests I offer in my clinic are:
Bioimpedance analysis for body composition - this tells me your body fat mass, muscle mass, hydration levels, visceral fat mass, biological age and gives me an idea of bone mass and inflammation levels. I use bioimpedance analysis to give me a baseline of your current body composition and then use it to track your progress around your body composition goals. I also use it for women who are entering menopause to check their muscle mass, because as we age muscle mass becomes vitally important to keep up healthy, stabilise our skeleton and prev...
If you are having troubles either falling asleep, waking throughout the night or waking too early, this can be a main obstacle to wellness for you. It is while you sleep that your body repairs and regenerates. Melatonin plays an important role, not only with sleep, but it has also been linked to cancer prevention as it is a powerful antioxidant. A lack of sleep can make you tired, anxious, depressed, crave unhealthy foods, such as sugar as you are looking for an alternate energy source, which left unchecked, can lead to obesity. Adequate sleep is essential for your immune system, stress response and can be protective against conditions related to ageing, such as dementia. If you aren’t getting the recommended 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, work your way through this list to not only feel more energized, but also to prevent ill health being more likely in the future.

Phytochemicals are various biologically active compounds found in plants. Phytochemicals are associated with the colour pigment of the plant and each phytochemical has been researched to have different health benefits. Organically grown plants tend to have higher levels of these health giving substances in them, due to the plants needing to fend for itself, rather than rely on a pesticide to deter different predators, or artificial fertilizers to feed it. As a result to these stressors; the plant exerts an antioxidant defence mechanism, in the form of a phytochemical.
Research has linked diets low in phytochemicals to obesity
More than half of the population is deficient in phytonutrients. Research shows that we require at 9-15 serves of phytonutrient rich foods, in order to experience maximum health benefits.
Red pigmented foods are rich in the phytochemicals lycopene, anthocyanins and astaxanthin. These phytochemicals are related to the following health benefits...
Over the years of treating many clients children and spending time in Kindergartens, playgroups and school with my own children I regularly hear parents discussing issues they have with their children…
Do these sound familiar toyou?
“MY CHILD HAS PROBLEMS WITH BEDWETTING”
“MY CHILD HAS PROBLEMS WITH ECZEMA”
“MY CHILD HAS PROBLEMS WITH ASTHMA”
“MY CHILD HAS LEARNING DIFFICULTIES”
“MY CHILD STRUGGLES WITH SITTING STILL OR PAYING ATTENTION”
“MY CHILD DISPLAY’S REGULAR DEFIANT BEHAVIOUR”
“MY CHILD MISBEHAVE’S REGULARLY”
“MY CHILD SUFFERS FROM HYPERACTIVITY”
“MY CHILD HAS DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS SUCH AS DIARRHOEA AND/OR CONSTIPATION”
It may not be their fault. It might actually be the fault of the artificial colours, flavours and preservatives in their diet. There is a body of evidence suggesting learning and behavioural disorders can be exacerbated by artificial additives in food. Many parents of children with learning or behaviour issues suspect that their child is reacting to something in their diet, bu...
Upon rising each morning, drink a large glass of water with the juice of a lemon or a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with the mother. Wait half an hour before eating breakfast.
Try to leave 5 hours in-between each meal to allow your last meal to be completely digested.

Here’s the naturopathic how to guide to a detox diet…
There are many reasons why detoxification may be necessary for you to enable you to reach or maintain a state of optimal wellness. Some of these reasons are within our control, such as poor diet and alcohol intake, whereas some factors are out of our control such as air pollution and toxins which are produced during digestive processes. In a healthy person, these toxins are mostly easily dealt with and detoxified via the kidneys and liver, however years of toxic accumulation and impaired functioning of these organs, can gradually start to affect our health and manifest as signs such as fatigue, premature ageing, bloating, weight gain, headaches, nausea and more.
Instead of restricting your diet and making adetox difficult, it is important to focus on replacing unhealthy options with healthy ones and ensurin...
I keep hearing about Naturopath’s negatively in the news…what’s that all about?
“Naturopath’s don’t use scientifically proven therapies”.
“Naturopath’s can’t help with serious health complaints”.
“Naturopath’s aren’t qualified health professionals”.
“Natural Medicine is a magic wand alternative – a Naturopath can look into your eyes, see what’s wrong with you and give you some pills to fix anything…no hard work required”.
These questions and statements are bandied around when the topic of Naturopaths comes up at a dinner party. I will address them all in the following article.
Why should you see a Naturopath?
Naturopath’s can not only treat you for a health ailment that bothers you, but can also help you achieve wellness and prevention of chronic disease. For example, addressing a weight problem will also reduce your cancer risk, help rid your body of stored, unwanted toxins, reduce arthritis pain, prevent you from developing ty...
